Drew Timme, Damian Lillard will be Milwaukee Bucks teammates
Former Gonzaga men's basketball All-American Drew Timme will have another All-NBA teammate at his side in Milwaukee this season, as the Portland Trail Blazers agreed to send Damian Lillard to the Bucks in a three-team blockbuster deal that also included the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday.
Portland will receive Jrue Holiday, Deandre Ayton, Toumani Camara, the Bucks' 2029 unprotected first-round draft pick and swap rights in 2028 and 2030. The Suns will receive Jusuf Nurkic, Grayson Allen, Nassir Little and Keon Johnson in return, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal comes months after Lillard requested a trade in July, and while many expected the Miami Heat to be his final destination, it was ultimately Milwaukee that landed the seven-time all-star with the help of Phoenix.
After 11 seasons in Portland, Lillard is paired with two-time NBA MVP and former champion Giannis Antetokounmpo. That duo alone renews the Bucks' title hopes for 2023-24, as U.S. sportsbooks give them around 4-1 odds to take home the Larry O'Brien trophy in June. Only the Denver Nuggets, Boston Celtics and Suns have higher odds.
As for Timme, who signed a two-way deal with Milwaukee in August, there's a chance he will earn a more secure spot on the team's roster following the trade. The Bucks were previously capped at 18 players, though after dealing Holiday and Allen in the Lillard deal, the team could have one open roster spot heading into the 2023-24 season. Timme could still feature in the preseason, though an opportunity at a more secure position on the main roster is still in play.
However, due to the nature of two-way contracts limiting how much time a player can spend with their NBA team, it's likely Timme's time will be split between the Bucks and Wisconsin Herd, Milwaukee's G-League affiliate team. That is unless he earns a guaranteed contract from the Bucks at some point during the regular season.
"The next goal for him would be to continue to make progress and have a good training camp," former Gonzaga All-American Dan Dickau said on the Gonzaga Nation podcast. "To the point where maybe it becomes converted from a two-way contract to a regular contract at some point."
Regardless of his playing time, Timme is still in position to be crowned an NBA champion by season's end on the coattails of Milwaukee's new star-studded duo.
