Asa Newell, 5-star 2024 recruit, lists Gonzaga in final four schools

Montverde Academy product took an official visit to campus in July

Five-star recruit Asa Newell has narrowed his list of schools down to Gonzaga, Alabama, Georgia and Texas, according to On3.com's Joe Tipton.

The Athens, Georgia, native is a consensus five-star recruit in the 2024 class across all major recruiting databases. Newell grades as a top-10 recruit according to Rivals.com and On3.com and is 11th on ESPN's Top 100, which also has him as the top-ranked recruit in the state of Florida.

Newell has officially visited each of his final four schools, though he does not have a timeframe for his commitment yet. After visiting Alabama in August, he went to Texas last week and has two stops scheduled for Georgia (Sept. 23 and Oct. 7).

On3.com and Rivals.com expect Newell to commit to the Georgia Bulldogs, where his older brother Jaden was a walk-on before earning a redshirt as a freshman last season. In addition to his final four teams, Newell reportedly gave Auburn a "hard look" in a report from ESPN's Paul Biancardi. Newell's other offers included Kansas, Michigan and Baylor.

A commitment from Newell, who received an offer from Gonzaga in July, would make him the third-highest-ranked recruit in program history behind Chet Holmgren and Jalen Suggs.

Gonzaga has established a track record recruiting talent from Montverde Academy. Filip Petrusev, Andrew Nembhard and his younger brother Ryan all attended the high school basketball powerhouse in Florida. And with assistant coach R-Jay Barsh, who was previously on Florida State's coaching staff, it appears those ties remain strong with Newell's recruitment.
