Week 12 provided more excitement than some of us may have expected in college football. In the Group of Five, several key performers engineered exceptional wins for their programs. In the early games in particular, we saw some teams overcome incredible odds or even break long-standing records.

These three notably caught our eyes.

QB Joey Aguilar – App State

Despite the fact that James Madison hasn’t and will not be eligible for postseason competition this season, the Dukes have been arguably the Sun Belt’s best team from the start of the season – making Appalachian State’s 26-23 upset of James Madison all the more notable.

Mountaineers quarterback Joey Aguilar’s performance can’t be overstated enough. He finished 26-of-42 passing for 293 yards and two touchdowns against one of the conference’s top defenses, giving App State their seventh victory and nice feather in the cap in what’s been a bit of a seesaw season for them.

Jacksonville State Rushing Attack

In Jacksonville State’s 56-17 rout of Louisiana Tech today, Rich Rodriguez’ turned back the clock, resembling his teams from West Virginia as a three-headed monster of a run game spearheaded the Gamecocks’ victory.

QB Zion Webb and running back’s Malik Jackson and Anwar Lewis combined to rush for 437 yards and six touchdowns in the win over the Bulldogs, whose defense has struggled throughout the season and now sit amongst the bottom third in Conference USA in run defense.

QB Frank Harris – UTSA

UTSA signal-caller Frank Harris has had a decorated career during his seven-year stint with the Roadrunners. From nearby Schertz, Harris chose his hometown program over several offers from larger programs both out of high school and during his collegiate career over the transfer portal.

It was only fitting that in what could be Harris’ final home game at the Alamodome, he put on a show for the hometown fans.

Harris went 31-of-46 passing for 411 yards and three touchdowns while adding an additional 112 yards on the ground in the team’s 49-21 win over a rising South Florida club, who made the trip to San Antonio hoping to earn their sixth win and qualify for bowl eligibility.
