Following one of UNLV's strongest seasons in program history, the Rebels are seeing heavy losses in the transfer portal. The biggest hit thus far came on Monday afternoon, as redshirt freshman quarterback Jayden Maiava announced his intent to transfer in a lengthy letter posted to his social media accounts.

Maiava threw for 3,085 yards with 17 touchdowns and ten interceptions. He also rushed for three touchdowns and 277 yards.

The news comes seven days after Maiava explicitly said he would return to UNLV for the 2024 season at the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

Maiava will have three years of eligibility remaining. He took a redshirt in 2022, his first college season. He was named the starter in week three when Doug Brumfield went down with an injury. Maiava was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year for the 2023. He's a former three-star prospect who played high school football in both Nevada and Hawaii.

Brumfield, as of now, is reportedly expected to return to UNLV's QB room. He has exhausted three years of eligibility. He redshirted the 2020 season, but made starts in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

UNLV went 9-5 in 2023, ending the season with three consecutive losses, including the Mountain West Championship.
