Southern Stuns UNLV With 'All-Around Beatdown'

The Southern Jaguars stunned the UNLV Rebels at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

The Southern Jaguars (1-1) stunned the UNLV Runnin' Rebels (0-1) with an 85-71 upset at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.  "It was an all-around beatdown at the hands of the visiting Jaguars," Mike Grimala reported.

The Rebels in their season opener didn't go as planned, as the Jaguars dominated with an early 40-21 lead at the half.  Southern shot 47.1% (16 of 34) compared to the Rebels 26.9% from the floor in the first half.  In the second half, the Jags improved to 69.2% shooting, while the Scarlet and Gray managed 57.1%.

Coach Kevin Johnson's Jaguars dictated the pace in the paint, pouring in 38 to the Rebels' 24 points, and buried 61.1% of their baskets from beyond the arc.  Southern also had 11 points off of UNLV turnovers.

Tai'Reon Joseph led the Jaguars with 22 points, two rebounds, one assist, and a steal.   The other Southern players with double figures in the victory were Delan Muon (16 points), Brandon Davis (13 points), and Tidjiane Dioumassi (12 points).  The Men from Baton Rouge had a great effort as the bench players added 43 points in the contest.   The Rebels bench managed just 5 points the entire game.  Isaiah Cottrell was the Rebels leading scorer with 18 points and added 7 rebounds and 4 blocks on the evening.

Southern will remain out west as the Jaguars will meet No. 12 Arizona for an 8 PM CT tip-off in Tucson on Monday, Nov. 13.
