Three HBCU Women's Basketball Teams Have Historic Mid-Major Top 25 Rankings

Three HBCU women's basketball programs reach an historic Top-25 rankings for mid-major programs.

HOUSTON - For the first time in history, three women's basketball teams from HBCUs have together been ranked in the "Women's Mid-Major Top 25," according to Liv Antilla (LivForHoops) and CollegeInsiders.com.  Jackson State (No. 18), Norfolk State (No. 19), and North Carolina A&T(No. 25) received the rankings for Feb. 6.

The weekly poll has only two voting members from HBCU programs, Tomekia Reed of Jackson State and Larry Vickers of Norfolk State.

Liv Antilla ranks the top-five HBCU women's basketball teams:

  1. Jackson State (13-6, 9-0 SWAC)
  2. North Carolina A&T (14-6, 8-1 CAA)
  3. Norfolk State (17-5, 6-1 MEAC)
  4. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (12-10, 7-2 SWAC)
  5. North Carolina Central (11-11, 5-2 MEAC)

Top performances by players in HBCU women's basketball for the Week of Feb. 5. are:

  • Florida A&M's Ahriahna Grizzle posted 57 combined points and grabbed 13 rebounds over Alabama A&M and Alabama State.
  • NC A&T's Jordan Dorsey averaged 17.6 points during the Lady Aggies' eight-game winning streak.
  • Norfolk State's Diamond Johnson and Kierra Wheeler combined for 48 points vs. Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Jackson State's Ti'lan Boler scored 20 points against Southern and 14 points versus Grambling State.
  • Amiah Simmons of Alabama A&M tallied an average of 23.5 points, five rebounds, and 4.5 assists in victories over FAMU and Bethune-Cookman.

The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Coastal Athletic, Conference USA, Horizon, Independent, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast, Western Athletic.

The CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25 is now in its 14th season.
