Alabama State Head Coach Talks On Coaching, Team Goals, Winning Celebration Bowl
The HBCU sports community is stirring with the knowledge the 2023 football season are approaching. Several important interviews have occurred within the HBCU sports metaverse. One of the more intriguing discussions was with the Alabama State head coach Eddie Robinson Jr. and Victory Formation host Jeff Lightsy Jr.
In Coach Robinson's interview, they tackled key topics such as his competitive spirit, will to win, team goals, recruiting quality players, physical and mental training, the Celebration Bowl, and the rich history of the SWAC.
Often we forget coaches are human — observe the recent health challenges of Coach Prime. "That work-life balance is something that I probably need to work on a little better," Robinson addressed with Lightsy. "It's important because we all have families, and we know that football is the big thing in our life now. But at some point, whether it's a coach, you're going to hang up the whistle or the cleats, and your family's going be there for you."
Although Alabama State posted a 6-5 record in Robinson's first season as head coach of the Hornets, his team was competitive. Their 4-4 SWAC record exceeded early-season predictions for the program. Comparatively, the SWAC East favorites, Florida A&M, will feel the pressure for Bama State and Jackson State this season.
"Our goal is to get to the Celebration Bowl and win it. You have to put those goals out there. You have to put those lofty expectations on the kids, and the fans, and the administration," Robinson mentioned.
Coach Robinson stressed the importance of winning non-conference games for his squad. "As much as we love to beat up on each other, we have to win games outside the conference also. I think that's huge."
Alabama State opens the new season at ASU Stadium with a contentious battle between Coach Eric Dooley and the Southern Jaguars on Saturday, Sept. 2.
