Does Longtime HBCU Head Football Coach Fred McNair Land A New Job Before The 2024 Season?

Where longtime HBCU head football coach lands in 2024 is anyone's best guess.

HOUSTON — not a problem. Today's prose on Fred McNair won't win any journalistic praise. It's about a travesty in HBCU football...but, football is a cruel sport.

HBCU GO's Nia Symone asked, "Where would Fred McNair land next?" I would love to be Paul Mooney's "Negrodaumas" on the Dave Chapelle Show and have the clairvoyance of "Yoda." My scratch-off lotto ticket says, "No one knows for sure."

I wrote this response to Nia, "Unfortunately, there aren't many head coach options for Coach McNair. Florida A&M is the only DI HBCU opportunity available. Benedict and Morehouse are programs that could benefit from his expertise. Unfortunately, the timing after the Texas Southern saga could have Coach McNair sitting out the season as a head coach. Unless he is offered and willing to accept a position as an assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, or advisor."

Options Are Few...Now

The options are dwindling this offseason. Texas Southern's Board of Regents wanted a big name. It had to be someone from the NFL. Look at Deion, Eddie Robinson Jr., and Eddie George...it was time to copycat to find their next Top Cat. Coach of the TSU Tigers...

Reportedly, the search committee and board kicked the tires of Rod Woodson, Andre Johnson, Brett Maxie, and Hines Ward to finally settle in on Cris Dishman as the Tigers' new head coach. Kudos to Coach Dishman, who remains highly respected in Houston from his days with the Houston Oilers.

Hopefully, Coach Dishman is the right man for the job. Still, where does this leave Fred McNair?

The longtime HBCU head coach's journey isn't over...just paused. If Coach McNair doesn't get a new gig this season, it could be a great time for him to reset, reload, and take receipts. Mos Def.

Fred McNair Is Not Done

McNair, 55, is 48-33 as a head coach. It's a testament to his effectiveness on the sidelines and how he develops young men. Throughout his career, he has achieved notable successes. SWAC titles, numerous records, Celebration Bowl appearances...but not the ultimate...yet.

One of our most respected black head coaches has a place somewhere. Until Florida A&M, Benedict, Morehouse, and other unfilled openings close, he should remain one of the top choices in leadership for a football program.

Push all opinions aside, he still has a voice in this game. He's HBCU football. In blood, sweat, and tears.

Coach Fred McNair's career is...
