Baton Rouge, LA -- Jackson State turned off the lights on Southern's home opener for a third-straight "BoomBox Classic" victory.  The 2023 BoomBox Classic may forever be known as the "Lights Out Classic" when Jackson State cast darkness on Southern's home opener winning 27-14. Quarterback Jason Brown rebounded following his erratic performance in the Orange Blossom Classic a week ago to led the Tigers over the Jaguars.

Southern started the scoring from a Harold Blood to August Pitre for a 65-yard touchdown pass. Jackson State running back Desmond Multrie blazed through the Jags' defense for a 20-yard touchdown run with 11:25 in the second quarter.

Later, Jason Brown located Rico Powers for a 63-yard touchdown connection, but the extra point was no good. The Tiger led 13-7 with 8:58 before halftime.

Blood had an up-and-down first half, but Southern mounted a nice drive that ended when Blood threw an interception to defensive back BJ Washington in the end zone.

Jackson State received the football after intermission. It was 4th and 2 when Jason Brown passed for a first down. A couple of plays later, the Tigers scored on a 21-yard outside run by Irv Mulligan. The Tigers extended their lead to 20-7 Tigers with 9:01 on the clock. 13-plays, 65-yard drive for Jackson State. The Sonic Boom of the South started "Rocking" at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Sacks and penalties halted the Jaguars' drives. Jackson State was winning in the trenches and started taking shots downfield. Southern enters the 4th quarter with two straight strikes by Harold Blood. He later found Allen, who brought the football to the JSU 35-yard line. A couple of plays later, Kendric Rhymes was flipped up and fumbled the football. However, the replay showed his elbow downed the ball. On the next play, Rhymes ran for a 27-yard touchdown scamper. Blood was 5-of-6 on the drive. 20-14

Following the touchdown, the Tigers immediately answered when WR Andre Hunt turned off the lights on the Jags for an 80-yard touchdown. Gerardo Beaza booted the extra point to go up 27-14. 11:28 in the 4th.

Blood was sacked and fumbled at the Jags 20-yard line. Jackson State was turned back as Southern stopped Mulligan at the 1-yard line. A few plays later, Blood threw another interception at the 32-yard line.

JSU placekicker Baeza missed a 40-yard kick to the right, and Southern took over in good field position with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game.  Still, the Jaguars did not have answers for the Tigers a fell 27-14 in front of their home sellout crowd.
