Mark Evans II: HBCU Football Star's 2023 NFL Scouting Combine Quotes
Offensive lineman Mark Evans II out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, will participate today in the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine field. Here's a compilation of his quotes and thoughts from interviews in Indianapolis.
Our colleague and longtime Miami Dolphins reporter Alain Poupart of All Dolphins provided the following quotes from Evans at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. Also read Poupart's article on the close relationship Mark Evans II has with Miami Dolphins left tackle Terron Armstead who is also an UAPB alum.
He felt other HBCU players should have been at the NFL Scouting Combine:
"Let me go back and think on that. Jordan Lewis from Southern was a great pass rusher. I like Jordan Lewis. I like Jackson Dumas as well. And also some of the other HBCU linemen like me. I like Robert Mitchell (???) from North Carolina, Central. I feel like he's a great player. He's a great finisher and he's physical."
On fellow UAPB Alum Terron Armstead:
"He's both a big brother and a mentor," Evans said. "He tells me everything, what to expect. He's the blueprint for players like me coming from HBCU, the things he's done things, the things he's been through, what he's doing right now. It's all a great thing to see, him coming from the school like me. It's always a great thing to see. Terron has been a great person, a great player. He's an even better person, the things he does for people, his city, it's a great thing to do and I hope to do that for my city and my people as well."
On whether the NFL is doing enough for HBCUs:
"I feel like they are making (progress), but I feel like there definitely could be more. I feel there should be way more than two people here from HBCUs at the combine. I feel like there's a lot of good players out there."
On the HBCU Legacy Bowl:
"I was going to play in the Legacy Bowl, but the timing for the Legacy Bowl and going to the combine was kind of conflicting. I wanted to come here fresh and be able to do my thing and put on a show. But I really wanted to have played in the Legacy Bowl."
On playing at an HBCU program:
"I feel like the advantage for me going to HBCUs was the pool of players was smaller, so I feel like I was able to stand out if I went out there and did what I had to do each and every game. When scouts came through, they always told me that I was the only player they were scouting, so I was able to sit down and talk to each and every one of them, and I feel like that was really important me to get the experience and talk with the scouts. It also pushed me. If I would have gone to a bigger school, I feel like I'd still being the person I am, I still would have been able to try to come here and do what I had to do to make this spot today because that's kind of the person I am. I want to go out there and compete. I want to play the game at the highest level."
Mark Evans II's 2023 NFL Scouting Combine workout will take place on Sunday, March 5. HBCU Legends will report his official results.
