Should Jackson State Make a Change at Quarterback?

Sophomore Jalon Jones is a big play quarterback for Jackson State. However, he has been under pressure and sacked often this Spring session.

Is it time for a quarterback change at Jackson State?

After the Spring season's first game, Coach Prime promoted Jalon Jones to the starting quarterback role.

The Tigers have lost two straight games after winning their first three of the season. ESPN color analyst Jay Walker posed the question to announcer Tiffany Greene if Jackson State would consider switching quarterbacks.

SHOULD COACH PRIME PULL THE PLUG ON JONES?

I believe Coach Prime should look elsewhere before making a change to Mallory or Casey.

Jones did not have a horrible day against the Jaguars. Jackson State's quarterback finished with 243 yards passing with 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, and ran 15 times for 74 yards. In last weekend's 35-28 loss against Alabama State, Jones passed for 180 yards passing, 1 touchdown pass, and added 94 yards with two touchdowns rushing. His numbers are telling the complete story for JSU.

WHERE'S THE PROTECTION?

Jackson State's offensive line is not protecting Jones in the passing game. Tight ends and tackles are missing routine blocking assignments. Alabama State and Southern used defensive backs to blitz off the edge and the interior. The Hornets recorded five sacks on Jones, and Jaguars had four sacks. Against Mississippi Valley State, the offensive line allowed only one sack on Jones; Mallory and Casey had none. In five games, JSU has conceded 14 sacks for 84 yards.

The real culprit may not be the quarterback but how the offensive line is blocking. Before Jackson State meets the top SWAC and HBCU team in the nation, Alabama A&M, co-offensive coordinators Michael Pollack and Jason Phillips must develop a gameplan to protect the quarterbacks or be patient in the rushing attack. Sophomore quarterback Jones may still be the best option at quarterback for the team to win.

COPYCAT THE PROS

After covering Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints for years, it all comes down to decision-making for a quarterback. He has the ability to stretch defenses and keep them off schedule with his arm and legs. One thing Sean Payton emphasizes is quarterback protection. Even the most talented QB dislikes hearing footsteps and watching his pocket collapse. Jackson State's blocking assignments and interior communication need work.

The Alabama A&M (1-0, 1-0) vs. Jackson State (3-2,2-1) game will be played on April 10 in Jackson, MS, at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium at 2:00 PM CT.
