BREAKING: Southern's Goal-Line Stand Stops Grambling, Wins 50th Annual Bayou Classic

Southern used a goal-line stand to defeat Grambling in the 50th Annual Bayou Classic.

NEW ORLEANS - HBCU legends named Doug Williams and Pete Richardson were at Caesars Superdome to witness Southern stopping a Grambling fourth-quarter rally to win 27-22 in the thrilling 50th Annual Bayou Classic.

The Grambling Tigers struck first when Myles Crawley had a perfectly executed RPO for a 1-yard touchdown scamper to lead 7-0 with 1:17 left in the first quarter. Southern answered in the second quarter with two offensive touchdowns and a special teams scoop-six score off a blocked punt.

First, Noah Bodden tossed a strike to Darren Morris for an 8-yard touchdown reception to tie the score at 7. Next, the Jaguars cashed in and took a 14-7 lead when Kendric Rhymes found paydirt on a 2-yard rush.

Grambling was attempting a field with 32 seconds remaining before halftime. However, the Jaguars' special teams, which interim head coach Terrence Graves leads, snuck through the line and blocked Tanner Rinker's 44-yard attempt. Defensive back Joshua Griffin tight-roped the sidelines with the football to expand Southern's lead, 21-7.

The Jaguars came out of the locker room, still on fire. On the second play from scrimmage, running back Kendric Rhymes torched the Tigers defenders for a 73-yard rushing touchdown to expand the lead 27-7. Placekicker Joshua Griffin missed the extra point attempt.

Grambling started to swing the momentum in its direction following Andrew Jones' pick-six of Noah Bodden to get within two scores, 27-14, in the third period.

On Southern's next drive, punter Robens Beauplan kneeled in the endzone to receive a snap, and the G-Men would score an easy two points. Southern's lead started dissipating 27-16 at 6:58 in the 3rd.

Grambling began to mount a comeback with a 1st and eight near the goal line. BUT! Jordan Carter stepped in front of a Myles Crawley pass in the endzone for a touchdown-saving interception.

Southern couldn't move the football and punted to GSU. Chalk powered a run behind Grambling's massive offensive linemen for a 3-yard touchdown plunge. A failed two-point attempt left the Jaguars holding onto a 27-22 lead with 7:02 left in the classic game. 15-unanswered points by the Tigers forced Southern to add at least a field goal to have an eight-point advantage.

Southern couldn't move the ball and punted to Grambling with four minutes in the contest. In excellent field position, running backs Chance Williams and Floyd Chalk took the Tigers inside the five-yard line. BUT, AGAIN! On 4th down, defensive back Demetri Morsell knocked down the pass to Rash in the end zone, which was the ballgame.

Southern's interim coach Graves became the first person to lead Grambling and Southern to Bayou Classic wins as head coach (interim or permanent).
