Texas Southern's Head Coach Candidates Emerge
HOUSTON - Texas Southern University is currently interviewing Brett Maxie and Mickey Joseph as candidates for the head coach position, according to sources. Reportedly, both have scheduled interviews. Benedict's Chennis Berry confirmed with HBCU Legends that he had a conversation with Texas Southern regarding the opening.
Maxie is a former Texas Southern Tiger alumnus who played 13 seasons as a defensive back in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, and San Francisco 49ers. He also coached as an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
Mickey Joseph is the brother of Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who was in Houston for the Denver-Houston game on Sunday. Joseph was the former interim head coach for the Nebraska Cornhuskers - also an alumnus. He was known as a New Orleans high school legend from Archbishop Shaw High School, setting numerous Louisiana high school records, and was a human highlight reel. A New Orleans TV station produced a video tribute to him with the music "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil in the background.
Mickey Joseph has previous HBCU coaching experience as a position and assistant head coach at Grambling State, Alcorn State, and Langston University.
The aspiring head coach was arrested and charged with domestic assault and strangulation for an incident with his wife on Nov. 30, 2022. Nebraska officials later dropped the charges.
The Texas Southern position has drawn interest from candidates across the country. Current head coaches Fred McNair (Alcorn State) and Dawson Odums (Norfolk State) are rumored to be potential candidates.
Steven Gaither from HBCU GameDay reported that Chennis Berry was offered the head coaching position at South Carolina State but has yet to accept officially.
VP of Athletics, Dr. Kevin Granger informed former head coach Clarence McKinney that his contract, set to expire on Dec. 15, would not be extended. HBCU Legends will have more updates on the Texas Southern University head coach interviews.
