Texas Southern Will Not Renew Coach McKinney's Contract

Texas Southern University will not renew the contract of head football coach Clarence McKinney.

HOUSTON - Texas Southern University will not renew the contract of head football coach Clarence McKinney, according to VP of Athletics, Dr. Kevin Granger who verified with HBCU Legends.  Coach McKinney's contract was due to expire on Dec. 15. On Saturday, the Tigers lost a 35-34 heartbreaker to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the season finale.

McKinney said in his postgame comments, " "I appreciate this opportunity. I don't take for granted to be the head coach of Texas Southern University Tigers. Growing up in the neighborhood, always hearing the band as a kid. Coming over and playing on the field during those times I was a kid, and playing a little tackle football. It's a special moment for me to be the head coach at TSU."

Clarence McKinney's head coaching record at Texas Southern University was 12-35 overall and 9-26 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Currently, there will be strong candidates for the position. Chennis Berry, the head coach of Benedict College, is presently one of the top candidates for many open positions.

The departure of Coach McKinney has put the future of quarterback Andrew Body at TSU in question. Body redshirted this season and has two more years of NCAA eligibility.
