Indiana Baseball's AJ Shepard to be Out For 'Significant Period of Time' After Surgery
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Following No. 23 Indiana baseball’s 12-6 win versus Miami (Ohio) Tuesday, head coach Jeff Mercer said redshirt freshman AJ Shepard will be out for probably four-to-six or six-to-eight weeks after his left arm or wrist surgery.
During Sunday’s win over George Mason, Shepard collided with an opposing runner going for a wide throw at first base and was on the ground for several minutes. Below is a picture taken from Shepard's social media.
Shepard didn’t play all of last season due to his second Tommy John surgery on his right arm. He was in the dugout Tuesday with a cast on his left arm. Over the weekend, Shepard started all three games in South Carolina, hit two home runs and batted 3-for-10.
“I’ll be honest with you, it’s hard,” Mercer said postgame Tuesday. “He’s an incredible kid and a great player and you hate it for him. Obviously, coming off the two years of injuries to have that. But he’ll be back this year, and when he gets back in there, we’ll welcome him in with open arms. But he’ll be okay. He’ll be okay. It’s a tough deal for the kid and you feel for him.”
Indiana’s plays Friday night at Baylor.
