A Look at Indiana Women's Basketball Newcomers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana women's basketball is welcoming three newcomers to the 2023-24 season. Freshmen guards Lenée Beaumont and Julianna LaMendola and UT Martin transfer forward Sharnecce Currie-Jelks are officially Hoosiers.
The incoming freshmen class is small at two players, but the depth Beaumont and LaMendola provide will make up for the lack of numbers. Both guards are their respective state's Ms. Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year.
From Lisle, Ill. 6-foot Beaumont, who played at Benet Academy, averaged 19.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals per contest. She led the Redwings to the state tile game but fell just short of the championship in double overtime.
Coppell, Texas native LaMendola led Coppell High School to its best finish in program history with a 38-4 season record and a deep playoff run. The 6-foot-1 guard is also putting up video game numbers averaging 17.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
Beaumont said she and LaMendola are already best friends and have been communicating often. They've even reached out to 2024 recruit Faith Wiseman encouraging the forward and hyping her up for when she suits up for the cream and crimson in two seasons.
Just this week, the Hoosiers announced UT Martin transfer forward Sharnecce Currie-Jelks has joined the party. She's the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and was selected to OVC First Team. The 6-foot-2 forward is averaging 15.2 points per game shooting 53.9 percent from the field.
The Hoosiers still have time to add more players if they choose as there's still some scholarship spots left. However, the pool is looking stacked as four starters return, (five including Sara Scalia) and head coach Teri Moren and staff are chasing that first NCAA Tournament banner.
