BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Asa Newell announced his top four schools for his college decision on Wednesday, and the Indiana Hoosiers did not make the cut.

Newell is a five-star forward in the class of 2024, and along with Liam McNeeley, Derik Queen and Curtis Givens III, is one of many Montverde Academy basketball players in the class that coach Mike Woodson and IU have pursued.

Unfortunately for Woodson and the Hoosiers, those efforts were all for naught in regard to Newell. The 6-foot-9 forward is now only considering Alabama, Texas, Georgia and Gonzaga for his college decision, according to Joe Tipton of On3.

Despite coming off the bench behind both McNeeley and Queen at Montverde this past year, Newell is rated as the No. 8 overall in the entire class of 2024 by 247 Sports. In fact, Newell is the second highest rated 2024 recruit on the extremely talented Montverde roster. He trails only Cooper Flagg, who recently moved up from the class of 2025, and was immediately appointed the No. 1 overall ranked player in the class of 2024.

It's not hard to see why, as standing 6-foot-9 while also possessing burst and vertical ability, the untapped potential for Newell seems unlimited. Newell was also a member of the USA National Team in the FIBA U17 World Cup in 2022, and in the FIBA U19 World Cup in 2023. He averaged 7.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.2. blocks per game for Team USA in 2023.

Newell played his first two years of high school basketball at Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., before transferring to Montverde. His older brother, Jaden Newell, is a walk-on at Georgia.

Indiana does not currently have a commit in the class of 2024, though Woodson and Co. are the favorite to land the five-star McNeeley, who recently cancelled his planned visit to Texas.
