Big Ten Daily (Nov. 7): James Madison Upsets No. 4 Michigan State in Opener /

There's been talk around East Lansing that legendary Michigan State coach Tom Izzo might have another national title team on his hands this season, but that certainly didn't look to be the case on Monday night.

It was an epic failure for Michigan State on many levels.

The No. 4-ranked Spartans were stunned at home on opening night, losing 79-76 in overtime to James Madison. Tyson Walker scored 35 points for Michigan State, but they were otherwise horrible. They made just 1-of-20 three-pointers, missed 14 free throws and allowed 14 offensive rebounds, a rapid departure for a program that's always considered to be one of the best rebounding teams in the country.

This was a stunning loss, if only for its rarity. It's the first time Izzo has ever lost a season opener in the Breslin Center. Michigan State's last season-opening loss in East Lansing was way back on Nov. 29, 1976 when Jud Heathcote's team lost to Central Michigan.

Michigan State trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, and struggled to scrap back in the game. They forced overtime, but Raekwon Horton hit a three-pointer for James Madison with 10 seconds left to seal the win. It was only the second time ever that JMU had beaten a top-25 team, dating all the way back to 1992 when they beat No. 19 California.

“I don’t know if I have ever seen us shoot that poorly,” Izzo said. “Give them a lot of credit. They played better than us. They played harder than us.”
