Big Ten Roundup (Feb. 26): Maryland Tops No. 21 Northwestern, Creates 2nd-Place Logjam

Maryland finished 10-0 at home in Big Ten play after beating No. 21 Northwestern 75-59 Sunday, forcing a four-way tie for second place in the Big Ten after a wild and wacky weekend. Here's our league roundup for Sunday, with the full final-week schedule as well.

Maryland completed its perfect home Big Ten season on Sunday with an impressive 75-59 beatdown of No. 21 Northwestern, winning all 10 of its conference games at Xfinity Center.

The victory gave Maryland it's 20th win of the season under first-year coach Kevin Willard, and the Terrapins are now 11-7 in the Big Ten, tied for second place with Northwestern, Indiana and Michigan with just a week to go.

Purdue is two games ahead of that group, as they jockey for a top-four seed and a double bye in the Big Ten tournament that starts on March 8 in Chicago.

Jahmir Young again led the way for Maryland, scoring 18 points on senior day, with all five starters scoring in double figures.

“It’s a moment that you’re going to remember for the rest of your life,” said Young, one of five seniors honored before the game. “We're ust trying to take care of business but also enjoy it and stay in the moment.”

Northwestern, hoping to win its first Big Ten title in 90 years, lost for the second straight time. They are now also 20-9 and 11-7 in the league. Boo Buie, who scored 35 points for Northwestern against Illinois earlier this week, had just four on Sunday, going 1-for-9 shooting.

“They outplayed us in the second half,” Northwestern Coach Chris Collins said. “We couldn’t keep up with the scoring.”
