Grace Berger Hits Game-Winner for Spanish Team Gernika KESB
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Just two weeks after she scored an efficient 12 points in her international basketball debut, Grace Berger hit a game-winner for Gernika KESB on Saturday.
The all-time winningest player in the history of Indiana women's basketball had a successful rookie season in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever. However, with the Fever missing the WNBA playoffs, Berger has spent the last month in Spain playing for Gernika, similar to what many professional women's basketball players have done for the past two decades.
Gernika KESB is now undefeated in two games with the former Hoosier on their roster, as the Spanish club defeated Ferrol 64-63 on Saturday. After coming off the bench in her first appearance, Berger started this time around and scored nine points on 4-for-9 shooting in 24 minutes of play. And of course, when the team needed a bucket the most, it called on the Indiana-made guard for the game-winner.
In classic Berger fashion, she drove to her right after receiving a ball screen, and got her defender out of position with a beautiful pump fake. She then used her body to keep the on-ball defender behind her (this is often referred to as "keeping a defender in jail" in basketball jargon), and leaned forward to swish home a mid-range jumper. Ferrol was unable to score in its last possession of the game, giving Gernika KESB the one-point victory.
Berger and her Spanish team will play their next game on Thursday, Oct. 8, when they play at Ramat Hasharon.
