INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Thursday, the Indiana Fever announced that former Indiana women's basketball guard Grace Berger made the 2023 opening night roster. The Fever's first regular season game versus the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse is slated for Friday, May 19 at 7 p.m. ET.

Berger was a first round, No. 7 overall draft pick and caught the eye of head coach Christie Sides early with her 350-400 shots she put up before every practice in training camp. It may seem crazy that a first round draft pick might not officially make the roster, but it happens.

The WNBA only consists of 12 teams with 12 players on each active roster. Do the math, and that means good players are going to get cut. Berger beat out veteran players to make the Fever's roster, like Destanni Henderson, which shows her hard work as a Hoosier point guard is translating well to the big leagues.

"She did a good job," Sides said of Berger in the preseason. "She's got a learning curve like most rookies do. It takes a year or two to kind of understand the size and physicality and just the overall athleticism of this game in the WNBA. She's had a couple hits, but she gets right back up, and she's a fighter, and she has gotten better since training camp has started, really focusing on her shooting."

Unfortunately, Friday's game will not be broadcast on a major channel, but single game streams are available for $2.99 per game on the WNBA's League Pass, or a yearly league pass can be bought to access all games for $24.99.
