NEW YORK – The Empire Classic begins Sunday with a matchup between UConn and Indiana at Madison Square Garden. Both teams enter the game with 3-0 record, though neither has faced a Power 5 opponent.
Coming off a national title in 2023, UConn is back in the mix at No. 5 in the AP Top-25 poll. Indiana is working through replacing All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis and Big Ten Freshman of the Year Jalen Hood-Schifino, and has escaped with single-digit wins over three mid-major opponents to start the year.
The 2023 Empire Classic continues Sunday night with Texas versus Louisville, then the championship and third-place game on Monday.

- Series history: UConn leads the all-time series against Indiana, 6-4. The schools also met at Madison Square Garden in 2013, which ended in a 59-58 UConn win. The Hoosiers won the last matchup in Bloomington 68-63 in 2008, and the Huskies took home a 77-73 win in Hartford in 2007.

Meet the coaches
- Dan Hurley, UConn: Hurley is in his sixth season at UConn with a 107-55 record overall and a 53-39 mark in Big East and AAC play. UConn missed the NCAA Tournament in Hurley's first two seasons, lost in the Round of 64 the next two seasons, then won the national championship in 2023. Prior to UConn, Hurley reached the Round of 32 twice as the Rhode Island head coach, including winning the Atlantic-10 tournament in 2017 and winning Atlantic-10 coach of the year in 2018. Hurley's first head coaching job was at Wagner from 2010-12, and he played point guard at Seton Hall from 1991-96.
- Mike Woodson, Indiana: Woodson is in his third season at Indiana with a 47-26 overall record and a 21-19 mark in regular season Big Ten play. Woodson has NBA head coaching experience with the Atlanta Hawks from 2004-10 and the New York Knicks from 2012-14. Woodson played at Indiana University from 1976-80, and was named the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player as a senior under coach Bob Knight. He was the 12th overall pick in the 1980 NBA Draft, and played for various teams from 1980-91, averaging 14 points over 786 games.
