Indiana in Contact With Nation's Top 3-Point Shooter Koby Brea
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana could use a 3-point shooting boost, and Dayton transfer guard Koby Brea would provide just that.
Brea led the nation shooting 49.8% from 3-point range across 201 attempts, or 6.1 per game, for Dayton during the 2023-24 season. His 100 total 3-pointers made ranked 29th nationally. He entered the transfer portal with one year of eligibility left and has already garnered major interest.
Brea has reportedly heard from Kansas, UConn, Duke, Indiana, Arkansas, Louisville, Oregon, Penn State, Mississippi State, Miami, Illinois, Texas Tech, Arizona, Texas A&M, Xavier, St. John’s and Virginia Tech, according to On3's Jamie Shaw.
A 6-foot-6, 205-pound guard, Brea averaged a career-high 11.1 points and 3.8 rebouds per game as a senior in 2023-24. The vast majority of his scoring came from beyond the arc, as he attempted 201 3-pointers compared to just 45 2-pointers and 16 free throws all season.
Brea played 29.1 minutes per game for Dayton in 2023-24, but he came off the bench in 29-of-33 games. He had that role throughout his Dayton career, starting 21 total games across four seasons yet playing 23.9 minutes per game in 113 total appearances. That production off the bench led to Brea being named Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year twice, first in 2021-22 and again in 2023-24.
Brea shot 43.4% from 3-point range across 516 total attempts in his four-year career, including two seasons at 42% or higher. His worst percentage came as a freshman, 35.5%, though that was a much smaller sample size at 31 attempts. As a junior in 2022-23, he shot 37% on 135 attempts.
Dayton won at least 22 games in Brea's final three seasons under coach Anthony Grant, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024. As a No. 7 seed, the Flyers defeated No. 10 seed Nevada in the Round of 64, then lost to No. 2 seed Arizona. Brea had 15 points against Nevada and 14 points against Arizona, shooting a combined 9-for-16 from 3-point range in two games. Brea had 13 games with at least four made threes as a senior.
Brea originally committed to Dayton as an unranked recruit in the class of 2020 out of Monsignor Scanlan High School in the Bronx, N.Y.
Indiana would certainly welcome Brea's 3-point shooting prowess after the Hoosiers made just 32.4% of their long-range attempts in 2023-24, which ranked 12th in the Big Ten and 273rd nationally out of 363 teams.
Indiana coach Mike Woodson currently has five scholarships open heading into the 2024-25 season. He lost Xavier Johnson, Kel'el Ware, CJ Gunn, Kaleb Banks, Anthony Walker and Payton Sparks from last year's roster. And so far, Woodson has added 6-foot-7 freshman Bryson Tucker, a five-star recruit, and 6-foot-3 guard Myles Rice, a transfer from Washington State with three years of eligibility.
