Mackenzie Holmes Named Program's First AP Preseason All-American
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana forward Mackenzie Holmes is the first Associated Press preseason All-American in women’s program history.
The AP released the six-player list of All-Americans Tuesday afternoon, which features Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, LSU’s Angel Reese, Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley, Stanford’s Cameron Brink, and UConn’s Paige Bueckers.
Holmes obtained first team All-American honors from three publications in 2022-23, along with winning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and unanimous All-Big Ten first team honors. Last year, she averaged 22.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and shot an NCAA second-best 68 percent from the floor.
Holmes headlines the group of returning players for the preseason-ranked No. 9 Hoosiers, which won the Big Ten regular-season title in 2022-23 for the first time in 40 years. Entering this season, the forward made her third straight appearance as one of 20 preseason candidates for the 2024 Lisa Leslie award, which honors the nation's top center.
With 1,897 all-time points, Holmes is top-five in program history and second in blocks with 208. The team’s schedule begins next Wednesday, Nov. 1, in an exhibition versus Northwood at Assembly Hall. The exhibition tips-off at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on Big Ten-plus.
