Indiana Women's Basketball to Face Iowa on the Road in Final Regular Season Game
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Sunday afternoon, No. 2 Indiana women's basketball will face No. 6 Iowa on the road for its final regular season game.
The Hoosiers outright won their first Big Ten regular season title this week after first doing their part by defeating Purdue 83-60 last Sunday followed by Maryland taking care of the rest. The Terrapins defeated Iowa 96-68 in College Park on Tuesday, which means the best conference record the Hawkeyes could finish with is 15-3 if they beat Indiana.
The Hoosiers are 16-1 in conference, and although this game doesn't really count for anything, Indiana wants to finish the regular season the right way before the Big Ten tournament starts on March 1 in Minneapolis, Minn.
All-time, the Hoosiers are 22-52 when facing Iowa. Last season, the Hawkeyes beat Indiana three times, twice in the regular season and once in the Big Ten tournament championship. Last time out when Iowa came to a crowded Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Feb. 9, the Hoosiers finally beat them 87-78.
Three Hoosiers tallied double-figure scoring led by senior guard Grace Berger's 26 points. Iowa junior guard Caitlin Clark dropped 35 points on the Hoosiers, but was still met with solid defense by Hoosier junior guard Chloe Moore-McNeil, who put her in foul trouble with four personals.
Clark leads the Hawkeyes averaging 27 points per game, which ranks third in the country. She also totals the most rebounds with eight boards per contest.
Indiana senior forward Mackenzie Holmes leads the Hoosiers with 22.6 points per game for sixth best in the country and a team-high 7.4 rebounds.
These two Big Ten foes are most certainly up for Big Ten Player of the Year as each night out is never a disappointment for the young talents.
Currently, Iowa is shooting 50.2 percent from the field while Indiana matches that. Indiana bests Iowa with a 36.7 three-point percentage while the Hawkeyes hold a 35.1 percent from downtown.
The Hawkeyes are better on the boards racking up 38.3 rebounds per game while Indiana earns 36.7.
For two teams in the top three of the Big Ten, it'll likely be another close matchup as Clark warned Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be just as full if not more when the Hoosiers come to town. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN.
The matchup pregame coverage will be featured on ESPN's College GameDay from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. ET as Ellie Duncan will host the show along with commentators Andraya Carter, Rebecca Lobo, Carolyn Peck and Holly Rowe.
Duncan will also report live for ESPN SportsCenter in the 10 - 11 a.m. ET window.
