Indiana Women's Basketball: Yarden Garzon Competes in FIBA Women's EuroBasket for Team Israel
MUNICH, Germany — Indiana women's basketball guard Yarden Garzon is currently competing in her first FIBA Women's EuroBasket in Tel Aviv, Israel and Ljubljana, Slovenia from June 15-25.
In its 39th edition, 16 teams will compete for the coveted title in four groups of four teams. Tel Aviv will host Group A and B as well as the qualification for quarterfinals games, and Group C and D will compete in Ljubljana.
Garzon’s Team Isreal is in Group B in Tel Aviv, which is a 27-minute drive from her home of Ra’anana Israel. Hoosier alumna Aleksa Gulbe is also in the games for Team Latvia in Group A.
Israel will take on Belgium first Thursday morning (ET) at Tel Aviv Arena followed by Friday's matchup versus Italy at 8:30 a.m. ET. June 17 is a rest day for all 16 teams until Garzon is back in action on the 18th versus the Czech Republic at 11 a.m. ET. The quarterfinals will begin on June 19.
The first place teams in each group will automatically advance to the quarterfinals while the second and third place teams will compete in a single-elimination game to qualify for the final phase in Ljubljana. The whole tournament will then move there for the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Last time out, Serbia took home its second title in 2021 over France in Valencia. The event takes place every two years.
In her freshman season at Indiana, Garzon started all 32 games and led the team with 70 three-pointers shooting 45.8 percent from downtown. She ranked fourth overall in scoring averaging 11.1 points per game, which landed her on the All-Big Ten Freshman and Second Team.
