WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Indiana-Purdue rivalry returns Saturday night inside Mackey Arena at 8 p.m. ET.
Coach Matt Painter and the Boilermakers got the best of Indiana in the first matchup, claiming an 87-66 win at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Jan. 16. Ranked No. 2 in the nation and first in the Big Ten, Purdue can sweep the season series with a win tonight. The Hoosiers are coming off a 76-73 win at Ohio State on Tuesday, which required an 18-point comeback. Trey Galloway and Malik Reneau combined for 51 points, and Anthony Leal hit clutch shots late.
Welcome to our live blog, where we'll share updates, highlights and thoughts on the game live from press row at Mackey Arena.
10:02 p.m. – Lance Jones called for a technical foul. Looked like Anthony Walker knocked him over on a screen. They exchanged some words after the play. Purdue leads 75-53.
9:55 p.m. – Zach Edey just hit the first 3-pointer of his career. It's unbelievably loud inside Mackey Arena right now. On the other end, CJ Gunn hits a three. He's 3-for-3 now.
9:46 p.m. – It's getting ugly now. Back-to-back threes from Mason Gills push Purdue's lead to 61-35 with 9:48 left.
9:35 p.m. – Indiana is really struggling with fouls in the second half. Galloway just picked up his third. Purdue has eight points off free throws already. Boilermakers lead 50-30 with 13:30 left.
9:28 p.m. – Ware knocks down a three from the left wing, cutting Purdue's lead to 47-28 at the under-16 timeout.
9:25 p.m. – Reneau now picks up his fourth foul at the 17:15 mark. Anthony Walker and Anthony Leal check in for Reneau and Cupps. Reneau will have to sit for a while now. Purdue leads 44-25.
9:19 p.m. – And now Reneau picks up his third foul at the 18:08 mark, but he stays on the floor.
9:17 p.m. – Reneau and Galloway each pick up their second fouls less than two minutes into the second half. Both stay on the floor. Purdue leads 40-25.
8:58 p.m. – Halftime: Purdue 37, Indiana 25. Indiana scored just seven points in the last eight minutes of the first half. Did some good things before that. Ware's two fouls hurt. Braden Smith leads all scorers with 15.
8:53 p.m. – Galloway redeems himself a bit with some tough finishes on three consecutive possessions. First a floater, then a tough reverse layup under Edey, then a transition layup after a blocked shot by Gunn. Purdue leads 37-25 with one second left.
8:51 p.m. – Galloway goes 0-for-2 at the free throw line, and the Purdue crowd erupts louder than it's been all night. They get a free chicken sandwich when a player misses both free throws. It gets even louder a few seconds later after a 3-pointer from Gillis. Purdue leads 35-19 at the two-minute mark.
8:46 p.m. – Purdue freshman Myles Colvin hits a three, and Purdue's lead is 32-19 all of a sudden. Indiana has one point in the last five-plus minutes.
8:45 p.m. – Sparks goes 1-for-2 at the line. It got VERY loud as he attempted the second. Purdue fans get some kind of free food if an opponents misses both free throws. His make was met with a deep sigh.
8:43 p.m. – Sparks picks up his second foul at the 4:35 mark. He had a forearm pushing Edey's back. Edey makes one free throw. Purdue leads 27-18.
8:41 p.m. – Cupps anticipated a pass to Mgbako, but Braden Smith jumped the passing lane. A little give-and-go with him and Loyer frees Smith for a three, the first all game for either team. Keep that sequence in mind. Purdue leads 26-18.
8:39 p.m. – Indiana gets a five-second violation out of the timeout. Mgbako couldn't find anyone. Just can't happen. And now Ware picks up his second foul at the 6:13 mark.
8:34 p.m. – Galloway 0-for-2 from 3-point range to start, with one miss long and one short. Both teams have shot poorly from the outside so far, a combined 0-for-11. Purdue leads 22-18.
8:31 p.m. – Reneau called for a foul, his first. Edey caught it on a pick and roll and Reneau bumped him. Anthony Walker checks in now. It's clear Woodson is really trying to avoid Reneau and Ware getting in foul trouble, already using Sparks and Walker off the bench. Purdue leads 20-16.
8:29 p.m. – Sparks called for a blocking foul, and Jones hits both free throws. Ware and Edey check back in the game. Purdue leads 19-16 with 9:26 left in the half.
8:27 p.m. – Galloway with a nifty move inside to free himself for a floater. He has such good touch from anywhere in the paint. Smith answers with another layup. IU struggling to stay in front of him right now. He's got 10 points. After a Reneau layup, Purdue leads 17-16.
8:21 p.m. – Smith hist back-to-back layups to give Purdue its first lead of the game. Mackey Arena is deafening right now. Boilermakers lead 15-12 with 12:13 left. ANthony Leal checks in for Cupps. Heide and Furst in for Purdue.
8:19 p.m. – Edey steps around Ware for a layup. Looked like Woodson wanted Galloway to slide over earlier to help. Mgbako answers with a mid-range jumper, but Reneau can't catch his pass on the next trip. Sparks checks in for Ware, who has one foul. IU leads 12-11, 13:42.
8:18 p.m. – Galloway goes 2-for-2 at the line, IU leads 10-7. Gillis and Morton replace Jones and Kaufman-Renn.
8:14 p.m. – IU leads Purdue 8-7 at the under-16 timeout. Hoosiers moving the ball well early on, with four assists on all four made baskets. Ware forced one against Edey and airballed it. He has to recognize when it's not there against Purdue's 7-foot-4 center.
8:11 p.m. – Ware picks up his first foul at the 17:05 mark. Obviously, a big key for Indiana in this game is staying out of foul trouble.
8:09 p.m. – Great ball movement from Indiana on the second possession. The ball swung all the way around the arc, then Cupps drove it right into Edey's chest before dropping a pass off to Ware for a dunk. Edey and Reneau trade layups on the following two possessions. IU leads 6-4.
8:08 p.m. – Edey misses short, guarded by Ware on the first possession. Galloway finds a cutting Mgbako wide open under the basket for a layup. IU leads 2-0 after two possessions.
8:07 p.m. – Edey wins the tip, and we're under way.
7:42 p.m. – Starters tonight for Indiana remain the same: Gabe Cupps, Trey Galloway, Mackenzie Mgbako, Malik Reneau, Kel'el Ware. For Purdue, it's Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Lance Jones, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Zach Edey.
7:18 p.m. – Officials for tonight's game are D.J. Carstensen, Tim Comer and Brooks Wells. Purdue is a 17.5-point favorite, and the over/under is 148.5 points, according to the SI Sportsbook just over 40 minutes before tipoff.
7:00 p.m. – Ware is in full uniform for warmups. Looks like he's good to go tonight.
5 p.m. – Kel'el Ware is listed questionable, and Xavier Johnson remains out for tonight's game at Purdue. Ware left the Ohio State game late after planting his leg awkwardly on a dunk attempt. Johnson remains out indefinitely.
