Mackenzie Holmes, Yarden Garzon Sweep Big Ten Awards For Second Time This Season
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — For the second time this season, Indiana forward Mackenzie Holmes and guard Yarden Garzon have swept the weekly Big Ten awards as Holmes is Co-Big Ten Player of the Week with Iowa guard Caitlin Clark and Garzon is Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Holmes has now raked in four career Big Ten weekly honors tying for the second most of any Hoosier in program history. Garzon now becomes the fifth Hoosier to earn multiple freshman honors.
Plus, Holmes is this week's ESPN Player of the Week too after dynamite performances in taking down No. 14 Michigan on Monday, No. 2 Ohio State on Thursday and Rutgers on Sunday.
In those three games, Holmes averaged 24 points and 6.7 rebounds while shooting 70 percent from the floor. She beat down on the Wolverines with a 25-point, 10-rebound double-double and was the team's leading scorer with 26 points when shutting down Ohio State. Sunday, Holmes tied senior guard Grace Berger with a team-high 21 points.
Garzon averaged 14.7 points and 6.3 rebounds in the three victories as she shot 56.7 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from the three-point line. First, the Ra’anana, Israel native went 4-for-5 from the field including two triples in the Hoosiers' win over Michigan.
Versus the Buckeyes, Garzon recorded her first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds off of four three-pointers. She then closed out the week with four more three pointers versus Rutgers and has now made 53 triples this season.
Up next, No. 4 Indiana will begin its road game stretch with Minnesota on Wednesday before heading to West Lafayette to face rival Purdue on Sunday.
