Indiana hosted Maryland in the first Big Ten conference matchup of the season and came away with a 65-53 victory on Friday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana (6-1, 1-0 in the Big Ten) started conference play at home on Friday night against Maryland (4-4, 0-1) at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, winning 65-53. The Hoosiers were without their senior guard Xavier Johnson, who is out with a foot injury. He was in street clothes, and wearing a boot.

Indiana led the entire game — at one time by 23 points — and four Hoosiers were in double scoring figures. Kel'el Ware led the team with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Trey Galloway added 12 points, six rebounds and six assists. Sophomore forward Malik Reneau also had 11 points, five rebounds and six assists.

The Hoosiers travel to Ann Arbor next Tuesday to battle Michigan at 9 p.m. ET for their second Big Ten game of the season.
