WATCH: Jalen Hood-Schifino Converts Clutch Layup Over Zach Edey
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's freshman point guard did not shy away from the bright lights against the nation's No. 1 team
In fact, he wanted to make a big play in the most important moments.
Following a turnover from Purdue's Braden Smith as the clock ticked below one minute, coach Mike Woodson called a timeout with Indiana clinging to a three-point lead.
"When [Woodson] called a time-out I told coach, I'm going to get this last bucket," Hood-Schifino said.
He held the ball 45 feet from the basket as Race Thompson set a screen on Ethan Morton with five second left on the shot clock. Attacking the middle of the lane, Hood-Schifino went right at Purdue's 7-foot-4 center Zach Edey.
With soft touch off the glass, Hood-Schifino scooped the ball over Edey and through net as momentum sent him sliding into the court-side seats at Assembly Hall. The clutch finish gave Indiana a five-point lead, and free throws from Trey Galloway plus a fast break dunk from Hood-Schifino secured a 79-74 Indiana victory.
"[Hood-Schifino] asked for the ball coming down the stretch," Woodson said. "And I drew up two plays to get it to him, and he delivered."
