WATCH: Indiana Defense Stifles Michigan on Final Play, Hoosiers Escape With Win
Indiana coach Mike Woodson preaches every game that if his team defends, it'll have a chance to win.
That defensive identity showed up on Saturday night in Ann Arbor.
After a missed free throw from Trayce Jackson-Davis, Michigan coach Juwan Howard called a timeout with his team trailing by a single point. The play started with a Hunter Dickinson screen, allowing Kobe Bufkin to drive to the left side.
Indiana guard Trey Galloway recovered quickly from the screen to cut off Bufkin's drive, and Jackson-Davis fronted Dickinson in the post. Bufkin kicked the ball out to Jett Howard at the top of the key with the clock ticking below three seconds. Miller Kopp did not fall for Howard's shot fake, and he stayed in front of Howard to force a difficult shot at the buzzer. It fell well short of the rim, and Indiana escaped with a 62-61 win.
Jackson-Davis led Indiana with 28 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman point guard Jalen Hood-Schifino scored 21 points with five assists and four rebounds.
Next up for Indiana is a chance at revenge against the Northwestern Wildcats. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Welsh Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. Northwestern defeated Indiana 84-83 at Assembly Hall on Jan. 8, and the Wildcats are 17-7 overall and 8-5 in Big Ten play. Northwestern is in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET, hosting the No. 1 Purdue Boilermakers.
