WATCH: Xavier Johnson Receives Technical Foul Just Before Halftime
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Indiana point guard Xavier Johnson cut Illinois' lead to 38-34 just before halftime with a put-back layup.
But after the ball fell out of the net directly to Johnson, he passed it to Illinois forward Coleman Hawkins, who was standing out of bounds. The officials called Johnson for a technical foul. Players from both teams argued back and forth before heading into the halftime locker room.
After halftime, Illinois wing Marcus Domask made both technical free throws, extending Illinois' lead to 40-34 before play resumed. Here's a clip of the play.
Johnson has been no stranger to technical and flagrant fouls in his sixth-year senior season. He was ejected from Indiana's game at Rutgers for a Flagrant 2 foul when he hit Antwone Woolfolk below the belt, then he received a Flagrant 1 foul against Purdue for shoving Zach Edey.
Johnson scored eight points with three rebounds, two assists and two turnovers in the first half, and he remained in the starting lineup in the second half.
