Big Ten Fans Tabbed 'Most Superstitious' in College Football
When it comes to superstitious fans in college football, the Big Ten is second to none. And don't even try to give us Michael Scott's "I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious," line. We have data to back it up.
Casino.org conducted a study to discover the most superstitious fans in college football. What it found was that several supporters of Big Ten programs have some sort of superstitious belief.
Casino.org explained its methodology to tracking the superstitions of college football fans on its website.
"In November 2023, we surveyed 3,000 U.S. football fans about their pre-game rituals. We asked them a series of questions to discover which college football fans and conferences are the most superstitious.
"The average age of respondents was 40.2 years old. The representative sample comprised 69.8% male, 29.5% female, 0.4% non-binary, and 0.2% transgender."
Here are some of the interesting findings from the study:
Big Ten Fans the Most Superstitious
- Although Alabama has the most superstitious fans in college football, four Big Ten teams ranked in the study's top-six spots. Ohio State led the way at No. 2, with Penn State closely behind at No. 3. Wisconsin rounded out the top-five while Michigan was in a tie for sixth (Georgia and Texas).
- The Big Ten edged out the SEC and the ACC for the most superstitious fans in college football.
- The most popular superstition among fans was to wear a certain color on game day (49%). Other common trends included wearing a lucky clothing item (17.5%), avoiding betting on your favorite team (6.7%), watching the game at a specific place (6.5%), and eating the same meal on every game day (5.2%).
- In the Big Ten, the superstition of wearing a certain color was even higher than the total average. A total of 51.2% of fans in the Big Ten adhere to this "lucky charm" when their favorite team is playing.
