Big Ten Roundup (Aug. 30): Boo Buie's Hand Healing Well, Purdue Playing in 2024 Invitational
Boo Buie is the star to end all stars for the Northwestern men's basketball team.
The point guard for Chris Collins and the Wildcats is coming off a breakout season, which he led Northwestern to its best men's basketball season in program history. However, Buie suffered an injury earlier this summer, which required surgery on his right hand.
Fortunately, Buie appears to be recovering well from his injury, according to Jon Rothstein.
Rothstein also reported news on the Purdue men's basketball team. Coach Matt Painter and the Boilermakers are going to play in the 2024 Rady Children's Invitational in San Diego, along with Notre Dame and BYU.
Here's everything you need to know in today's Big Ten Roundup:
Boo Buie's Injury Recovery
It was major news for Northwestern when Buie announced he would return for a fifth season of college basketball.
Coach Collins' team marched to a 22-12 record, a second place regular season finish in the Big Ten and a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament during the 2022-23 season. Buie was the Wildcats' star, being named to the media's first team All-Big Ten, and leading the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game.
However, 'Cats' fans got rough news on the first day of August when it was reported that Buie was recovering from surgery on his dominant right hand.
Fortunately, news broke on Tuesday that Buie is, "healing well and should be ready to start practice," according to coach Collins, as reported by Rothstein.
Northwestern lost Buie's co-star in Chase Audige, but returns key contributors in Ty Berry and Brooks Barnhizer. The team was also active in the transfer portal, bringing in Ryan Langborg, Blake Preston and Justin Mullins, all of whom are expected to see significant minutes for NU in 2023-24.
Buie is the 10th all-time leading scorer in the history of Northwestern men's basketball with 1,541 career points. He is just 497 points behind the program's all-time leading scorer, John Shurna, and has a great chance at finishing his career with the most points in Northwestern history.
Purdue Playing in 2024 Invitational
Going from Buie to another Big Ten star returning for his fifth season of college basketball, Zach Edey's Purdue Boilermakers have made plans for the 2024-25 season.
Rothstein reported that Purdue, Notre Dame and BYU will all play in the 2024 Rady Children's Invitational in San Diego, with the fourth team still to be determined.
The Rady Invitational is a new feature in college basketball, hosting its inaugural tournament during the 2023-24 season. The games will take place on Thanksgiving day, and for this upcoming season, Iowa will face Oklahoma, while USC takes on Seton Hall. The championship and consolation matchups will take place on Friday of that week.
The 2024 Rady Invitational is a long ways away for coach Painter's team, but for any Purdue fans looking to visit San Diego next Thanksgiving, the Boilermakers have given you a perfect reason to do so.
