Saturday's game between Michigan State and No. 10 Illinois is a big one for various reasons. The Spartans are hoping to add a quality win to their NCAA Tournament resumé while the Fighting Illini are in the midst of a Big Ten title race.

Illinois won the first meeting against Michigan State back in January. The Fighting Illini edged out the Spartans 71-68. Now, Michigan State hopes to get revenge on its home floor.

  • Last meeting: The Fighting Illini squeaked out a 71-68 victory over the Spartans on Jan. 11, 2024. Nine players scored in double-figures, with Michigan State's Tyson Walker leading the way with 17 and AJ Hoggard adding 16.   • Series history: Throughout history, this series has been incredibly competitive. Since 1951, the series record is 64-64. Although Illinois has dominated recently, the two teams have been dead even in the last 10 matchups, with the record sitting at 5-5.

Meet the coaches

  • Brad Underwood, Illinois: Underwood is in his seventh season at Illinois, owning a 131-84 record during his time in Champaign. After going through a rebuild in his first two seasons, the Fighting Illini have been near the top of the Big Ten for the past five seasons. Illinois has finished in the top-five of the conference each of the past four years with three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Heading into Saturday's game against Michigan State, Underwood has Illinois positioned to compete for a Big Ten regular season championship in the final stretch of the year.
  • Tom Izzo, Michigan State: No coach has won more games while with a Big Ten program than Izzo. Earlier this year, Izzo won his 700th game at Michigan State. He took over the program in 1995 and has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success. He's led the Spartans to 10 Big Ten regular season championships, six Big Ten Tournament titles, eight Final Four appearances and a national championship (2000). Michigan State has reached the NCAA Tournament every year since 1998 under Izzo.
