Illinois Loses to Maryland, Big Ten's List of Undefeated Home Teams Falls to 6
Illinois is no longer one of the Big Ten's undefeated teams at home. The 10th-ranked Fighting Illini dropped a 76-67 contest to Maryland on Sunday in Champaign, suffering their first loss at the State Farm Center this season.
With Sunday's loss, Illinois became the first team in the top-seven of the current Big Ten standings to lose at home. Prior to the Terrapins' victory, the Fighting Illini were 2-0 in league play in Champaign.
Now, there are only six teams in the Big Ten with perfect conference records in home games.
- Wisconsin: 3-0
- Purdue: 3-0
- Indiana: 3-0
- Minnesota: 2-0
- Northwestern: 2-0
- Nebraska: 3-0
It's still early in the season, so this list will undoubtedly change. But it's still impressive to get this deep into the season with so many teams owning a perfect home record in conference games.
Maryland got major production from Julian Reese and Jahmir Young in the win. Reese finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Young led all scorers with 28 points in the contest.
Former Indiana forward Jordan Geronimo broke out of a slump, scoring nine points and knocking down just his second 3-point shot of the season. He was just one-of-23 entering Sunday's game.
The victory for the Terrapins was an uncharacteristic one, too. Maryland had dropped its last six Big Ten road games. Since the start of conference play last season, the Terps owned a lowly 1-11 record against league opponents away from College Park.
Which of the six Big Ten teams will be the next to lose their first home game of the season? You can view the upcoming schedule here and make your own prediction.
