Zach Edey continues to improve his stock for the 2024 NBA Draft. The Purdue star recorded 33 points, 14 rebounds and a blocked shot in an 87-66 win over Indiana on Tuesday night. Those numbers aren't why Boilermakers coach Matt Painter believes the 7-foot-4 superstar has a spot in the league, though.

If the year was 1995, Edey would undoubtedly be the No. 1 pick in the draft. But in today's NBA, big men have to be able to do more than protect the rim and score with their back to the basket.

Since last season, Edey has made substantial improvements on the floor, particularly on the defensive end. Because of the strides he's made, the reigning National Player of the Year as emerged as a lottery pick in ESPN's latest mock draft.

"His ability to guard the basketball, his ability to get out on the perimeter," Painter said, when asked how Edey has transformed into a potential lottery pick.

"You know, when you compare it to somebody 6-foot-8, 210 (pounds), it's a lot different, right? But when you compare it to people his size, he's really moving. ... He makes his free throws. He can shoot on the perimeter, I just don't let him — even though people get upset about it."

Edey is poised to claim back-to-back National Player of the Year honors. This season, he's averaging 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.7 assists per game.

The big man's improvement in ball-screen defense is something Painter has raved about this season. Edey has also become more effective passing out of the double team.

"He's improved defensively, he's a willing passer. He doesn't have the bulls*** because he didn't get recruited. That's the best way I can say it," Painter said.

"He does a lot of little things to help a team win. That's why I think they've got a place there for him. He can rebound, he can pass, he can score with his back to the basket. I think he's got a spot."

As well as Edey has played through the first 18 games this season, he's still not satisfied with his game. Maybe that's a big reason why NBA teams will start taking a harder look at the 7-footer this summer.

"I think I can move a lot better, I can guard a lot better, do a lot of things," Edey said, regarding his areas of improvement.. "Understanding the game better. The game slows down.

"I think there's a lot of things I do better, but there's a lot of things I can get better at."
