Purdue Legend Robbie Hummel Leaving ESPN for NBC, Fox
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Robbie Hummel will still be calling Big Ten basketball games during the 2023-24 season. However, he will no longer be doing it for ESPN.
Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported Monday morning that the Purdue basketball legend is leaving the worldwide leader to join NBC and Fox, where he'll be providing color commentary for college basketball games. Hummel will also continue calling games for Big Ten Network.
With the Big Ten inking new TV rights deals with Fox, NBC and CBS, ESPN's coverage of the historic conference is coming to close. Being one of the most prominent public voices for Big Ten basketball, it's not surprising that Hummel wanted to keep calling the games that featured those teams. Fox Sports and Big Ten Network share common ownership, making it easy for Hummel to call games for both.
Hummel played at Purdue from 2008-12 under coach Matt Painter and had a storied career as a Boilermaker. He finished his time in West Lafayette with 1,772 career points and made 216 career threes. Those marks are good enough to make Hummel the 10th all-time leading scorer in the history of Purdue men's basketball, and number eight all time in three pointers made.
He also had a brief stint in the NBA, playing two seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2013-15. However, Hummel's post-career days have as a broadcaster have stuck out far more than his time in Minnesota did, as he was with ESPN for six seasons leading up to 2023.
According to Marchand's report, Hummel is expected to be on quite a few Big Ten Tuesday matchups throughout the year, which could include some of the games that NBC plans to broadcast on Peacock for the 2023-24 season.
