WATCH: Tom Izzo Sounds Off Following Michigan State's Loss to Northwestern
Tom Izzo's patience is wearing thin. The long-tenured coach at Michigan State got snippy in his post-game press conference following the Spartans' 88-74 loss to Northwestern on Sunday.
Izzo was visibly frustrated following another defeat, falling to 1-3 in the Big Ten and 9-6 overall. Michigan State was expected to compete for a conference championship this year, but has struggled to find its footing.
After Sunday's game, Izzo didn't hold back about his team's performance.
"I am disappointed in the way we played. For the 29 years of players I had before this, that's disappointing. That's not Spartan basketball," Izzo said.
He griped about his team's physicality, saying Northwestern was the aggressor throughout the course of the game.
"They were physical as hell. I didn't like that, and on the other side of it, I loved it," Izzo said. "I loved it. Absolutely loved it. That's why I give (Northwestern coach Chris Collins) credit. I thought those guys were way more physical than us.
"It's bad coaching. Because, remember now, you're not allowed to blame a player. So, it's bad coaching. And I'm not being sarcastic, my guys didn't play. Might get the football pads out for rebounding. As I say all the time, I'll probably get sued."
After talking about the aspects of the game, Izzo's presser got a little strange. As it progressed, he seemed to get a little more irked, particularly when it came to the stat sheet.
Not anything in particular on the stat sheet, just the sheet itself.
"I hate analytics, because they're phony. Sooner or later, you look at a guy's heart, you look at a guy's eye and you find out about a guy," he said. "Everybody in the NBA and in college wants analytics. What does analytics mean here? Does it mean we won the game? Analytics are crap."
Safe to say Izzo is fed up with his team's poor performance. It'll be interesting to see if this attitude somehow translates to a better effort moving forward.
Michigan State plays No. 10 Illinois on Thursday before a home contest with Rutgers on Sunday.
