On a day when a lot of former Hoosiers sadly did not make the final cut for an NFL team's 53-man roster, Cam Jones held on to a roster spot with the defending Super Bowl champions.

The Indiana linebacker made the Kansas City Chiefs' 53-man roster amid preseason cuts on Tuesday, as first reported by Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star. Jones signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in April.

The five-year football player for coach Tom Allen and the Indiana Hoosiers was not originally projected to make Kansas City's final roster, according to reports earlier this week.

However, a team-best seven tackle performance against the Cleveland Browns in NFL preseason action the past week seemed to be just enough for Jones to secure his spot

Jones had a storied career in Bloomington from 2018-22. Arriving as a linebacker from Memphis, Tenn., he saw the field every season he was at Indiana, including during two of the greatest IU football seasons ever in 2019 and 2020. Jones finished his career as a Hoosier with 208 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, two interceptions and a touchdown.

He's one of only three Indiana football players to ever have been named a three-time team captain, along with Antwaan Randle El and Emmett King. Jones also earned honorable mention All-Big Ten status in 2020, and received Indiana’s Howard Brown “Dedication to IU Football” Award in 2021.

Jones' legacy as one of the all-time great Indiana football linebackers is secure. Now, having made the roster of the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, his opportunity to shine on the biggest stage will only grow.
