BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana hosts Michigan State on Saturday in the Old Brass Spittoon rivalry game.

Last week, the Hoosiers suffered a heartbreaking 48-45 loss at Illinois in overtime, despite career-best performances from quarterback Brendan Sorsby and wide receiver Donaven McCulley. Illinois' backup quarterback John Paddock threw for 507 yards, good for third most by an Indiana opponent in program history.

Michigan State is coming off a 38-3 loss at No. 1 Ohio State, where the Spartans gained just 182 total yards of offense.

  • Last meeting: Indiana defeated Michigan State 39-31 in double-overtime on Nov. 19, 2022 in East Lansing. The Spartans led 24-7 at halftime, but Indiana stormed back in the second half to force overtime. In the snow, Indiana quarterback Dexter Williams II only completed 2-of-7 passes, but the Hoosiers ran the ball 44 times for 257 yards and four touchdowns. Jaylin Lucas also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
  • Weather: According to weather.com, it's going to be 51 degrees and sunny with a 6% chance of rain, and winds from the northwest at six miles per hour at Noon ET in Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday.

Meet the Coaches

  • Harlon Barnett, Michigan State (interim): Barnett was named interim head coach on Sept. 10, just before Michigan State's 27-24 loss at Rutgers. Barnett replaced former head coach Mel Tucker, who was fired on Sept. 27 while under investigation for sexual misconduct. Barnett has never been a head coach, but he has held various defensive coaching roles at Michigan State, Florida State, Cincinnati and LSU. Playing defensive back, Barnett helped Michigan State win the 1988 Rose Bowl and spent seven seasons in the NFL.
  • Tom Allen, Indiana: Allen has a 33-47 overall record and a 18-41 mark in Big Ten play in his seventh full season as Indiana's head coach. He took over for Kevin Wilson as interim head coach for the 2016 Foster Farms Bowl, which ended with a 26-24 loss to Utah. Allen was named 2020 American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, when he led the Hoosiers to a 6-2 record and reached as high as No. 7 in the AP top-25 poll, the school's highest ranking since 1967. Along with Bill Mallory, Allen is one of two Indiana head coaches to coach in multiple bowl games. Allen is a native of New Castle, Ind., and his coaching career includes stops at Temple Heights High School, Armwood High School, Marion High School, Ben Davis High School, Wabash College, Lambuth University, Drake, Arkansas State, Ole Miss, South Florida and Indiana.
