BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — After making a short trip north to Indianapolis, coach Tom Allen and the Indiana Hoosiers are back in Bloomington on Saturday to take on the Akron Zips.

Indiana will host an opponent under the lights for the second time this year, as kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET inside Memorial Stadium. The Hoosiers will be wearing new black uniforms in this game.

Indiana is looking to bounce back against Akron after a furious second half comeback against Louisville fell just short, ending in a 21-14 defeat for the Hoosiers. The Zips are coming off a 35-3 defeat at the hands of Kentucky, though the final score deceives how close the contest actually was. With less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Akron trailed their SEC opponents just 14-3, but Kentucky tacked on 21 points at the end to pull away.

Along with Indiana State, Saturday's matchup against Akron is a game most IU fans penciled in as a win on the schedule. Playing against a team in the bottom half of the MAC, Indiana should be able to win by a comfortable margin. However, the Zips are coached by Joe Moorhead, who brings Big Ten experience as a successful offensive coordinator at Penn State.

Meet the Coaches

  • Joe Moorhead, Akron: Moorhead is entering his second season as the Akron football coach, and he currently holds a 3-12 overall record at the school, and a 1-7 mark in MAC conference play. He was also the head coach at Mississippi State from 2018-19, and had a 14-12 overall record during his two seasons with the Bulldogs. Moorhead's Mississippi State teams reach both the 2018-19 Outback Bowl, and the 2019-20 Music City Bowl, but lost in both games. Despite having an overall winning record during his time in Starkville, Mississippi State went just 7-9 in SEC conference games during his tenure. Moorhead played quarterback at Fordham from 1992-95, and soon after took up a graduate assistant role at Pittsburgh in 1998. He then worked as a position coach in various different roles at Georgetown from 2000-03, at Akron from 2004-08 and at UConn from 2009-11. He then served as the head coach at his alma mater, Fordham, from 2012-15, before becoming the offensive coordinator for James Franklin and Penn State from 2016-17. In between his head coaching jobs at Mississippi State and Akron, Moorhead spent two season at Oregon as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
  • Tom Allen, Indiana: Allen has a 31-42 overall record and a 17-36 mark in Big Ten play in his seventh full season as Indiana's head coach. He took over for Kevin Wilson as interim head coach for the 2016 Foster Farms Bowl, which ended with a 26-24 loss to Utah. Allen is seventh among Indiana head coaches on the all-time wins list, and he's six wins away from moving into fourth place. Allen was named 2020 American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, when he led the Hoosiers to a 6-2 record and reached as high as No. 7 in the AP top-25 poll, the school's highest ranking since 1967. Along with Bill Mallory, Allen is one of two Indiana head coaches to coach in multiple bowl games. Allen is a native of New Castle, Ind., and his coaching career includes stops at Temple Heights High School, Armwood High School, Marion High School, Ben Davis High School, Wabash College, Lambuth University, Drake, Arkansas State, Ole Miss, South Florida and Indiana.
