ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Coach Tom Allen and the Indiana Hoosiers are playing in their second straight Big Ten road game on Saturday, as they head north to Ann Arbor to take on coach Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines.

Indiana is coming off a bye week, but before that, the Hoosiers suffered a 44-17 defeat at the hands of the Maryland Terrapins, which dropped IU to 2-3 on the season. Michigan, meanwhile, is 6-0 and ranked as the No. 2 team in the country in the AP top-25 poll.

The Wolverines have won back-to-back Big Ten titles under Harbaugh, and they have not lost in a regular season game since October of 2021. With the dynamic backfield pairing of quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum, along with a defense that's littered with NFL talent, Michigan is quite possibly the best team Indiana will face this season.

Meet the Coaches

  • Jim Harbaugh, Michigan: Harbaugh has a 80-25 overall record and a 54-17 mark in Big Ten play, and he's currently in the midst of his ninth full season as Michigan's head coach. He was also the head coach at Stanford from 2007-10 and had a 29-21 overall record during his time there, brining his overall mark as a coach at the college level to 109-46. In between his stints at Stanford and Michigan, Harbaugh coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14, and led the team to Super Bowl XLVI. The 49ers lost that Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens, who were led by Jim brother, John Harbaugh. Prior to becoming the coach of the Michigan Wolverines, Jim Harbaugh was their quarterback from 1983-86 under coach Bo Schembechler. In 1986, he finished third in the Heisman voting, won Big Ten Player of the Year and led the Wolverines to the conference title and a Rose Bowl appearance. Though the length of his absence was often changing, Harbaugh eventually served a three-game, self-imposed suspension at the start of the 2023 season. He has since coached Michigan in its three wins over Rutgers, Nebraska and Minnesota.
  • Tom Allen, Indiana: Allen has a 32-43 overall record and a 17-37 mark in Big Ten play in his seventh full season as Indiana's head coach. He took over for Kevin Wilson as interim head coach for the 2016 Foster Farms Bowl, which ended with a 26-24 loss to Utah. Allen is seventh among Indiana head coaches on the all-time wins list, and he's six wins away from moving into fourth place. Allen was named 2020 American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, when he led the Hoosiers to a 6-2 record and reached as high as No. 7 in the AP top-25 poll, the school's highest ranking since 1967. Along with Bill Mallory, Allen is one of two Indiana head coaches to coach in multiple bowl games. Allen is a native of New Castle, Ind., and his coaching career includes stops at Temple Heights High School, Armwood High School, Marion High School, Ben Davis High School, Wabash College, Lambuth University, Drake, Arkansas State, Ole Miss, South Florida and Indiana.
