Indiana Coach Tom Allen Addresses Job Security After 35-31 Loss At Purdue

Following a 35-31 loss to Purdue in the Old Oaken Bucket rivalry game, Indiana coach Tom Allen was asked about his job security. The Hoosiers finished 3-9 this season, the worst record in the Big Ten.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana lost 35-31 in the Old Oaken Bucket rivalry game at Purdue on Saturday.

The loss gave Indiana a 3-9 record on the season, the worst of any Big Ten team. It also continued a dismal stretch in which the Hoosiers have gone 9-27 overall, 3-24 in Big Ten play, and failed to reach bowl eligibility in three consecutive seasons since 2021.

After the loss, Indiana coach Tom Allen was asked if he is concerned about his job security.

"You know, I get it. You've got to win," Allen said. "I understand the nature of college football, and I understand that full well. I've been in this a long, long time. I want to win more than anybody, so we're going to keep battling and scratching and clawing. So that's out of my hands. That's not up to me."

Allen led the Hoosiers to the Gator Bowl and Outback Bowl during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Indiana went 14-7 across those two seasons, and Allen won AFCA Coach of the Year honors in 2020. But everything collapsed from there.

Through seven full seasons and the 2016 bowl game, Allen has a 33-49 overall record and an 18-43 record in Big Ten play as Indiana's head coach.

Due to the rapid nature of the transfer portal and coaching carousel in college sports, Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson must act quickly with whichever decision he chooses to make. Whether it's Allen or someone new, Indiana needs a leader that can work on retaining the current roster and recruiting others out of the transfer portal.

That starts Sunday.
