Indiana Quarterback Brendan Sorsby Enters Transfer Portal
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The transfer portal dominoes are starting to fall after Indiana fired head coach Tom Allen on Sunday.
Perhaps the most notable name to enter so far is Indiana quarterback Brendan Sorsby. He announced his decision Sunday night on social media. Sorsby has three years of remaining eligibility.
Sorsby entered the 2023 season in a quarterback competition with fellow redshirt freshman quarterback Tayven Jackson, who transferred to Indiana from Tennessee. Due to both players' inexperience, the competition stretched into the first two weeks of the season, with Sorsby and Jackson splitting snaps.
Allen named Jackson the starting quarterback for the Hoosiers Week 3 game against Louisville, but three games later, the Hoosiers were back to a quarterback rotation. Jackson and Sorsby split reps in a 52-7 loss at Michigan, and Sorsby was named the starter the following week.
At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Sorsby played every snap at quarterback for Indiana in the final six games, and the Hoosiers posted a 1-5 record. Despite ending the year with the Big Ten's worst record, 3-9, Sorsby showed some definite signs of growth as the season went on.
In his first-career road start, Sorsby and the Hoosiers nearly pulled off an upset at No. 10 Penn State. But with a chance to take the lead, Indiana went conservative and ran the ball three times in the red zone, settling for a field goal.
Sorsby led the Hoosiers to a 20-14 win over Wisconsin the following week, completing 19-of-31 passes for 186 yards, one passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown.
Despite a 48-45 overtime loss at Illinois the following week, Sorsby played arguably the best game of his college career in Champaign. He completed a career-high 22-of-33 passes for 289 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for two touchdowns, displaying the physical running style that attracted Indiana to him during the recruiting process.
Sorsby finished the season with a 57.2 completion percentage on 135-of-236 passing for 1,587 yards, 15 passing touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ran the ball 114 times for 286 yards and four touchdowns.
Sorsby was recruited to Indiana by former offensive coordinator Walt Bell, who was fired after Indiana's 44-17 loss at Maryland on Sept. 30. Out of Lake Dallas High School in Texas, he was ranked No. 66 among quarterbacks in the class of 2022.
Due to Indiana's coaching change, it wouldn't be surprising to see a majority of the roster enter the transfer portal. Players can still return to their previous school after entering the transfer portal. But this way, Sorsby and others can talk to coaching staffs at other schools, as well as Indiana's new coaching staff, and make their decision from there.
