What Indiana Defensive End Andre Carter Said After 23-3 Loss to Ohio State
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana has new players all over the defense, and perhaps the biggest standout newcomer on Saturday was defensive end Andre Carter.
In his first game for the Hoosiers since transferring from Western Michigan, Carter finished with four tackles, two tackles for loss and a pass breakup. He was a steady source of pressure in the backfield, contributing to an overall positive outlook for Indiana's defense after one game.
Here's what Carter said after the Hoosiers' 23-3 loss to Ohio State.
Q: You got through that Ohio State offensive line a few times, especially in the first half, what did you do to get through them?
Carter: "They work pretty well together as an offensive line, so you know, between the plays you've got to try your best with a group of guys like that to find a couple tendencies. Me being an old head, a sixth-year, I was able to kind of find a couple tendencies and do big things for our defense with those tendencies I found."
Q: You popped a double-team back I think on their first snap. Did you guys feel as a line that you found your rhythm very quickly, that you got them playing on your terms very quickly?
Carter: "Exactly, yeah. It really started with us coming out there and knowing like, 'Hey, we're a group of guys just as they are,' and we wanted to be able to set the tone. Coach Wilt talks about, 'We set the fight. We throw the first punch,' and we definitely came out there with an edge, and I think that helped us a lot. Our linebackers, man, they were triggering like crazy, which helped us play free and also freed up some things for them. Shoutout to Aaron Casey."
Q: Coach Allen talked about how he was proud of you guys in the red zone forcing a couple field goals. What's the mentality when they get in there, and how do you think you guys were able to force those?
Carter: "The mentality we come out on the field with is take everything and leave nothing. We've got our backs pinned up to the wall a little bit, that we love. We live for things like that. What more can you ask for than our back against the wall and having to hold it down for the guys and get the ball back to the offensive guys? All in that, our mindset was really just play hard and do our job honestly, just play hard and do your job. Don't try to be superman, don't try to do to much, just be where you're supposed to be at and free things up for the linebackers. My mindset is if I can go swat, rip then the tackle takes two, and as long as Aaron Casey and Jacob Mangum-Farrar come free, that's okay with me. So that's pretty much our mindset as a defensive line, to free things up for the linebackers."
