IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa City Police Department released its findings Wednesday of an investigation involving the youngest son of Iowa Men's Basketball coach Fran McCaffery. According to a report by Iowa's News Now, Jonathan J.F. McCaffery, who goes by Jack, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, a simple misdemeanor.

Iowa News Now reported at the start of the investigation that Iowa National Guard soldier Corey Hite died from injuries sustained after being hit by a car in west Iowa City on May 22. The station reported that Hite passed away on June 5.

The driver's name was first made public Wednesday, when the ICPD released its findings. Jack McCaffery, 16, is a minor who was a sophomore at Iowa City West High last school year.

Later in the day, Fran McCaffery and his wife, Margaret McCaffery, authorized a press release via Joseph T. Moreland, attorney at Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus, L.L.P. in Iowa City. It said that the family waited until now to release a statement out of respect for Sergeant First Class Hite’s family and to allow the ICPD to conclude its investigation.

It read:

“On May 22nd, just after leaving school, our 16-year-old son was the driver in a vehicle/pedestrian accident. Investigators have told us that it was an unavoidable accident with no evidence to suggest distracted driving. The pedestrian, who was jogging at the time of the accident, was waved in front of our son’s passing vehicle by the driver of another vehicle. The jogger, Sgt. First Class Corey Hite, passed away two weeks after the accident from the injuries he sustained.

We are devastated by this tragedy. SFC Hite’s family has our deepest sympathies. While our family continues to process the events of the past weeks and help our son cope with this accident, we will have no further comment at this time.”
