Spencer Petras Looking for New Home
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Spencer Petras has entered the transfer portal, a source very close to the situation confirmed to HN Monday afternoon. On3 broke the news of the Iowa quarterback looking for a new home earlier in the day.
The Northern California native served as the Hawkeyes' starting signal caller from 2020-22. He suffered a shoulder injury requiring surgery at the end of last season, a procedure that knocked him out for this fall. He's been serving on the coaching staff at Iowa this season.
The Hawkeyes made a splash last December, when it added Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara, naming him the starter right out of the portal. McNamara underwent knee surgery last fall and suffered a torn ACL against Michigan State early lasy month, ending his '23 campaign. He announced he was returning to Iowa next year.
Sophomore Deacon Hill has stepped in as the Hawkeyes' starting quarterback in McNamara's absence. Sophomore Joe Labas and true freshman Marco Lainez have backed up Hill. The team has received a verbal commitment from '24 Florida four-star James Resar.
With the expected depth at the position in '24, it makes sense for Petras to look around. He's following in the footsteps of his backups from last season, Alex Padilla and Carson May, who entered the portal last December.
Petras started in 31 of the 37 games he played at Iowa. He completed 56.7 percent of his passes for 5,199 yards (10th all-time) and 24 touchdowns against 19 interceptions. He won in 20 of his 31 starts.
