Iowa Wrestlers Dominate Michigan
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Five bonus point victories and eight wins overall propelled the second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team to a dominating 33-8 victory over No. 9 Michigan on Friday night in front of a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa won the dual’s first seven matches to build a 28-0 lead as it improved to 14-1 overall and finishes 7-1 in Big Ten action. The Hawkeyes had a 21-6 advantage in takedowns in the dual.
“They are without some guys, that has to be said,” said head coach Tom Brands. “We have Oklahoma State coming to town a week from Sunday and we have to get ready for the postseason, it’s right there.
“Teske, good job, we’re going to see a different guy there in a Michigan singlet if we meet them, a couple of different places, 165 as well. We have to keep controlling what we control and do what we do best at the most important time of the year.”
The Hawkeyes started the dual with three straight bonus point victories from No. 1 Spencer Lee, No. 15 Brody Teske and No. 2 Real Woods.
Lee opened the dual with an 11-2 major decision over No. 14 Jack Medley at 125. The Pennsylvania native had two takedowns and a two-point near fall to build a 6-1 first period lead, got an escape and stalling point in the second and a takedown in the third to secure the major.
The win was Lee’s 51st consecutive victory and it was his 12th bonus point win in 13 matches. He is outscoring his opponents, 140-28, this season.
Teske was dominant against Wilfried Tanefeu at 133, posting a 19-3 technical fall win in 4:09. The Fort Dodge, Iowa, native had two takedowns and two four-point near falls in the first period to build a 13-3 lead and he had another takedown and four-pointer in the second to end the match.
It was Teske’s first tech fall as a Hawkeye and it moved his record to 6-1 this season.
Woods made it 3-for-3 in bonus point wins with a 15-1 major decision over Pat Nolan at 141. Woods had two takedowns and a four-point near fall in the first to build an 8-1 lead and he added single takedowns in the second and third. The win was Woods’ seventh bonus point victory this season as he improved to 12-0.
“I like that I put points on the board, that’s the goal and focus, especially coming toward the end of the season,” said Woods.
No. 10 Max Murin notched Iowa’s fourth win – a 10-4 decision over Chance Lamer at 149. Murin had four takedowns in the match as he improved to 16-3 overall, which is one win shy of tying a career-high.
The match of the dual came at 157 when No. 13 Cobe Siebrecht won a 3-1 decision over No. 10 Will Lewan in sudden victory. The match went to overtime tied at one when Lewan was in deep on a shot. Siebrecht came out with a takedown on a scramble to notch his sixth ranked win this season. The Lisbon, Iowa, native is 10-3 overall.
“He was in on my leg, and I swam out around then I cartwheeled over him,” said Siebrecht. “I feel what’s going on and do what I can to score and not give up that takedown in overtime.”
Iowa won the first two matches out of the intermission. No. 9 Patrick Kennedy recorded a first-period fall – his third of the season – pinning Alex Wesselman in 2:31. The win moved the Minnesota native to 15-2 this season.
No. 16 Nelson Brands made it seven straight Hawkeye wins with a 5-1 victory over Joseph Walker at 174. Brands had a second-period escape and put the match away with a third-period takedown to improve to 5-4 this season.
Iowa’s final win came at 197 when No. 11 Jacob Warner had a technical fall victory over Brendin Yatooma, 16-1 (in 2:25). The Illinois native notched a takedown 13 seconds in before collecting three four-point near falls to build a 14-0 lead. Warner cut Yatooma with 50 seconds left before getting his second takedown to end the match.
It was Warner’s third technical fall of the season – a career high – as he moves to 12-4 overall.
Michigan won two matches at 184 and 285. No. 9 Matt Finesilver tech falled Drake Rhodes, 15-0, at 184 before No. 1 Mason Parris edged No. 3 Tony Cassioppi, 9-7, in the final match of the night.
