Franklin's 21 lead Jayhawks to rout against Black Bears
She may not currently be in the starting lineup, but Kansas Jayhawks guard Zakiyah Franklin can still have a huge impact on a game. On Friday, she reached 1,000 points in her Jayhawk career and just kept scoring, leading the team with 21 points as Kansas routed the Maine Black Bears by a score of 76-49. In total, five players scored in double digits for the Kansas, which is still undefeated on the season.
The Jayhawks jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but they gave up the lead halfway through the first quarter to fall behind 12-11. But a huge 13-0 run, including the first three-pointer for Franklin, put Kansas up by 12 at the end of the quarter. In the second, Kansas held Maine at arms length until a quick run ballooned the lead to 16 going into the half.
The second quarter was all Jayhawks, as multiple players got involved and Kansas just overwhelmed an outmatched Black Bears team. Kansas stretched the lead all the way to 31 before the final margin settled in at 27.
Kansas was a super efficient 50% from the field, but just 2-15 from three point range. Holly Kersgieter and Franklin each made a single shot from long range, but Wyvette Mayberry (4 attempts), Sanna Strom (3 attempts) and Chandler Prater (1 attempt) were unable to knock one down.
Taiyanna Jackson had 14 points and 9 rebounds in just 26 minutes. Mayberry scored 13 points on 12 shots in 32 minutes of action. Kersgieter scored 11 points on 12 shots in 27 minutes and Prater scored 10 points on 26 minutes.
The Jayhawks continue their road trip today with a match against even host St. Mary's. The game will tip at 4pm Central and can be seen via online stream.
